Demise of Karunanidhi: The last doyen of the Dravidian movement goes into eternal slumber
Five times chief minister and one of the stalwarts of the Dravidian movement, M Karunanidhi's sad demise has created a void in Tamil Nadu, just like it had happened after Jayalaliathaa's passing away.

Periar was the founder of Dravid Kazhagam (justice to Dravids). The revolution was mainly based on self-respect through ending caste and gender discrimination. What started as a social movement by Periar culminated into a political party known as DMK (Dravid Munetra Kazhagam). Although Anna Durai was the founder of Dravidian movement but his contribution was less due to his early demise.

Then it was both Karunanidhi and MGR, who started leading the Dravidian movement. And later, there was a split between MGR and Karunanidhi. MGR established a new party named ADMK, which was later renamed by Jayalalithaa as AIADMK. MGR became more successful than Karunanidhi because of the former's better political strategy. Karunanidhi, who had brought MGR into politics, though never succeed in defeating MGR, but never lost the spirit to fight back.

Both MGR and Karunanidhi shared a strange relationship. Although both were political rivals, whenever it was about Tamil Nadu's interest, MGR never hesitated in consulting Karunanidhi and Karunanidhi too, never shied away from lending support to MGR. The Dravid movement was their unifying factor.

However, after the demise of MGR, the AIDMK started distancing itself from the original Dravidian movement. But Karunanidhi continued to imbibe the philosophies of Anna Durai and Periar. But now after his demise, one can be sure that the original social Dravidian movement will come to an end.

Karunanidhi maintained the highest standards of federalism. DMK supported both the BJP and Congress as trusted ally.

All throughout his political career Karunanidhi was accused of corruption, nepotism. But at the same time, he was a great social reformer, champion of social equality and a true messiah of the poor. He was five time chief minister and never lost an election. He was elected first in 1957 when Nehru was the prime minister.

Many might not agree with his ideology, but there are people who worship him as God. In democracy there should be place for all types of ideologies.
