Deshmukh quits, no decision on successor yet
The deputy CM had to pay the price for his cold nonchalance and in a follow-through, the chief minister, too, was forced to call it quits. It might not improve anything, but these are the heads that deserved to roll
MUMBAI ATTACKS have already begun taking a political toll. Therefore, chief minister Deshmukh was forced to follow his deputy on his way out. It is noteworthy that the home minister of India, Shivraj Patil, has already tendered his resignation taking moral responsibility of the attack.

Deshmukh has submitted his resignation to the Congress Working Committee and not to the governor, which is not in accordance with the norm. He said that it was now upto the Congress to take a decision. The three most likely names that could be suggested for the chief ministership are Prithvi Raj Chavan, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Ashok Chavan.

The Congress said that the decision on successor will be in consultation with the allies and Deshmukh will hold the post until a successor is finalised.

After the gruesome assault on the financial capital of the country, it is the most predictable reaction from the authorities. Indian state just cannot afford to be seen saddled with the same leadership who failed to check or contain the attack in time.

Therefore, the resignations are not surprising. What is surprising is the insensitivity of someone perched as high as deputy CM in saying, “Itne bade shahar mein chhota hadsa ho jata hai. To total failure nahi hai. (In big cities like this, small incidents do happen. It's is not a total failure.)”

The deputy CM, therefore, had to pay the price for his cold nonchalance and in follow-through, the chief minister, too, was forced to call it quits. Perhaps, these are the heads that deserved to roll.
