Dhoni's statement about Gambhir - 'just one of those things,' says Anshuman Gaekwad
Mahendra Singh Dhoni surprised the gathered media in a pre-tour press conference yesterday stating 'Gautam Gambhir as the third opener,' knowing fully well that the player is not a part of the present team. Many people are reading between the lines and interpreting his comment in various ways.

But, Anshuman Gaekwad, former Indian cricketer is not reading his comment very seriously. He said, ''I do not see any weightage in the comment made by MS Dhoni.'' Gaekwad in fact refers to the entire episode as, ''just one of those things.''

But, being the skipper, his words might not just be taken as 'one of those things,' but rather seriously by the present crop of players, especially the openers, Murli Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan. This can, in fact act as a wake up call. To the contrary, Gaekwad said, ''His comment is not going to affect the team at all.''

It is rather surprising that the Indian skipper has come up with such a comment, when he is also said to be a part of the selection process. If he wanted the player so badly in the team, he could have done so by convincing the selectors. Ajit Wadekar, another former Indian cricketer rightly puts it across, ''Nobody should make such a big issue, because he also plays an important role in selecting the team.''

Looking at the Indian batting line-up, it lacks experience playing in bouncy pitches of South Africa. His experience might have come in handy for the Indian team. Wadekar feels that the selectors have come up with the right decision, in excluding Gambhir. Ajit Wadekar said, ''No doubt, Gambhir is talented. At the moment, it is important for one to look forward. The youngsters are doing well. It is good that the selectors are looking forward.''

On the same lines, Gaekwad said, ''Obviously experience is useful, but look at others (youngsters) in the team, they are performing.'' Youngsters in the team, such as Pujara, Dhawan and Rohit Sharma when given a chance, have been performing consistently. So, in spite of Dhoni's support, it might be difficult for Gambhir to make a comeback into the Indian team, but not impossible.

It is obvious that the selectors are looking forward, so the only way Gambhir can make a comeback is by performing consistently in domestic matches, not just in bits and pieces.
