Dibru Chaikhowa Sanctuary, Assam
Dibru Chaikhowa, the sanctuary is located in the Tinsukia district of Assam. It has an area of 640 sq km. Important birds and animals found in the sanctuary include white-winged wood duck, elephant, tiger, sambar, buffalo and wild horse.
DIBRU CHAIKHOWA is a national park in the Tinsukia district of Assam. Tinsukia is the last junction in the Indian Railways map under the NF Railways segment. Tinsukia is about 70 kilometres from Dibrugarh. Dibru Chaikhowa National Park is located by the river Dibru, a tributary of Brahmaputra, said to be the son of Lord Brahma. The tri headed god is also worshipped as one of the trinity and is believed to be the creator of all things.

At Dibru Chaikhowa, there are resorts to accommodate tourists. Migratory birds flock to the park by flying thousands of kilometres from the farthest side of the globe. One can find wild pachyderms and animals of the cat family in large numbers in the park. The alluvium formed by the sand during winter period brings a silverine glitter to the park. Various rare trees, flowers and also orchids, which are not found anywhere else in the world can be found in Dibru Chaikhowa. Besides the migratory birds, there are many varieties of birds, which can be found here. Many researchers from abroad come here to study the flora and fauna of the park. Reptiles of various kinds are inhabitants of Dibru Chaikhowa.

In Dibru Chaikhowa National Park, there are wild buffaloes and wild horse of an extremely rare breed. These horses are called ’bon Gharachia’, which means that these horses are wild domestic horses. These horses, which were earlier tamed as domestic animals fled to the wild and a new breed of such a kind grew up. This breed is found only in Dibru Chaikhowa.

In order to enter the park, one has to take permission from the state forest authorities of Assam. The nearest airport is Chabua near Dibrugarh, which is about 50 kilometres from Dibru Chaikhowa.
