Did you get an internship this summer?
Growing Westernisation has left nothing untouched and out of its purview. Not even the work culture. Internship is now a growing fad in the present scenario. India has very well adopted this concept and has beautifully implemented it.

Your resume is how you would want the other person to perceive you.  If you don't want your resume to be thrown into trash, then you need to have it filled with experiences. And the only possible source for getting such experience is what you call an internship. Furthermore, it does not hurt to have an impressive resume. And thus, getting an internship always helps.

No wonder how an internship alters one's career trajectory by giving all the required exposure and experience. One can easily get to know all the benefits of getting hired as an intern. Besides hands on experience, there are several other privileges that one gets. It helps you gain confidence and gives you an insight of the wider perspective of the real time work experience. The networking that you can accomplish being an intern can never be achieved being merely a student.

Internships in the current time have turned out to be an integral part of a student's life. Being one of the largest online platforms for providing internships, Internshala has seen a tremendous growth in recent years-from 1700 internship positions in 2011 to 2.5 lakh in 2016. A new kind of work culture is coming into a greater picture.

No doubt, internships have served the purpose of providing practical experience and the knowledge of how everything works at the work sector but there is no major denial in the fact that internships have started to become a mere formality.

Summer vacations have already commenced and the time has come for the students to get involved in internships. Being a part of the popular culture now, it has started compelling the other disinterested students to do the same. However, it's important to mention that disinterested students must not be confused with academically poor and worthless ones. There are some people who join internships only for the sake of having a tag of experience. Once something becomes compulsion rather than a choice, it ruins its essence. Students now merely work to get a certificate.

And those who have no internships in their hand have to face a lot. Not being able to show off in their social circle is one of those. There is a constant pressure on a student to get himself/herself engrossed in some work. Those who get rejected by the companies end up facing a kind of minute social ostracism in their circle. It becomes difficult to combat the pressure. It is really weird, that people now look forward to experience instead of qualities and skills. What is the point in stepping into an internship without even knowing what is it all about? If a person wishes to learn something and gain some knowledge before applying it practically, what is the harm? Let them learn, compelling them to work would be a crime.

Unpaid internship is also a growing concern now. And it must not be ignored. The interns do everything that they are told to do, they work incredibly hard to prove themselves and thus in the quest of getting to learn something, they end up working for free. Working for long rigorous hours and using every skill that they have, they almost negotiate their wage to zero. The question, thus, is, how ethical is it for the employers to exploit the workers in this manner?  

One of the major purposes of doing an internship is to brush up the pre-existing skills that one has. But, from different experiences of the students, it has also come to be known that sometimes the interns are told to do things that they aren't supposed to do as an intern. The only perk that one thus finds to still be in the work and not to leave despite all the unrequired stress is the certificate that will eventually build up a strong resume.

Interns, once hired, become workers, and the irony is that they aren't paid. Instead, we get to witness a completely different phenomenon- and it's a reverse formula. Internships are so much in demand now that the organisations providing it have now started charging for it. Students in need of experience pay thousands for being hired as an intern. Although this fee is considered to be nominal by the organisations- both private and government. Also they are of the opinion that if they invest their time and energy in teaching them, there is nothing wrong in charging a fee for the same.

However, it still remains an undisputed fact that a right internship can be the launch pad of your career. Try taking it as a learning process and not as a mere formality. And most importantly, do not do it just because the others are doing it. Do it only if you feel that urge. So rather than following the crowd, follow your heart.
