'Didi' decimates the red bastion: Derails dada
On Friday, Trinamool Congress created history by defeating the Left Front with a whopping 225 seats against the mere 63 seats won by the latter and with this came to an end the 34-yr uninterrupted rule of the Communist-led government in West Bengal.
ON FRIDAY, Trinamool Congress created history by defeating the Left Front with a whopping 225 seats against the mere 63 seats won by the latter and ended the 34-year uninterrupted rule of the Communist-led government in West Bengal with the resignation of Buddhadeb Bhattacharya as the chief minister.

Mamta Banerjee made the Left Democratic Front bite the dust by sweeping the polls by her strong slogans of “Paribartan” and “Ma mati o manush” (mother, land and people). All stalwarts of the party including Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, who contested from Jadavpur from where he had been wining since 1987, had to taste defeat and that so from all political greenhorns of Trinamool Congress.

The ruling party even lost in Red citadels namely Burdan, Bankura and Purulia. A gracious and placid Ms Banerjee, in an interview to a TV news channel after the results were announced, remarked, "The Marxists had been doing torture and atrocities over the years. This is the second independence day for West Bengal. No Marxists, no Maoists; people voted for a democratic set up, people voted for Trinamool Congress. The whole Bengal is celebrating the festival of democracy. I bow down my head to my people. This is people’s victory.”

When asked about what would be her policies on agriculture, she replied, ”I will try to make a balance between agriculture and industries.”

The CPI held an emergency meeting, in the evening, post the flabbergasting debacle in the assembly elections in Kolkata and the left leaders gathered to decide the party’s future and analyse the swept. Now, the LDF is governing only in one Indian state i.e. Tripura as the alliance has also lost in Assam and Kerala.

Mamta arose as a tigress for the land of royal tigers after she crusaded and fasted in Singur and was successful in pulling-out TATA in 2008. The down-setting trend of the Left’s sun had initiated back in 2009 with the incredible victory of the TC in the Lok Sabha elections. But, now the landslide triumph in the Assembly elections has proved to be the last nail in the coffin of the Red fort.

Besides the Left, the performance of BJP has also been pathetic. Though the Congress-TC alliance has won, but the Congress’ individual performance has also been below the mark. Pranab Mukherjee, the Finance Minister, has also expressed elation over TC’s remarkable triumph.

This is the end of only the beginning. Didi has a whole mountain of issues that need to be addressed. How the first women chief minister the state ever had  governs and works, will be closely watched.
