THE ALL India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh on Wednesday, November 18, assailed Bharatiya Janata Party and its Hindutva ideology. He was attempting to shore up support for the Congress candidate from Jamshedpur West, Banna Gupta, on a campaign visit to the city.

Appealing to voters to support Gupta, Singh said that the electorates should unanimously vote in favour of Congress candidates in all three constituencies - Jamshedpur East, Jamshedpur West and Jugsalai, in the first phase of polls, to bring the Congress in power in the state.

Addressing an election rally at Gandhi Maidan, Mango, lambasted BJP leaders and challenged their political commitments, calling their association with Lord Rama as 'opportunistic'. Unfurling the corruption issue, in the backdrop of enforcement directorate's proceedings against former CM Madhu Koda, he said that the Congress was 'clean' in the entire episode.

"We are not wary of a probe into the corruption charges against Koda and his aides. There should be a rational end to the proceedings against such corrupt leaders. The people should know the truth and choose their leaders responsibly. The Congress, backed by the centre, is the solution to free the state of corruption," Singh told the gathering of hundreds of Congress supporters who had flocked from neighbouring villages and suburbs of Jamshedpur.

In a brief press conference, Singh shielded Congress from the Koda episode, by saying that the party had only nine legislators in the Koda government. When asked about the decision of the party to make Koda the Jharkhand CM, he said, "We wanted to keep communal parties away from power in the state and this was the reason we supported Koda's name as CM. Our role was restricted when Shibu Soren and Lalu Prasad Yadav governments were in power. So, Congress is not involved in the corruption."

Union minister Subodhkant Sahay accompanied Singh and they were received at the Sonari Airport by district Congress president Ravindra Jha and other leaders of the party. Both leaders discussed preparations for the assembly polls. They asked party workers to do every bit to ensure victory for Gupta, who lost to BJP candidate Saryu Rai by a margin of 12,695 votes in the 2005 elections.
