Diminishing importance of Independence Day
At one time, people tried to emulate the examples of their great leaders. Hope, enthusiasm and love for motherland were wealth. Now, the charm and excitement of witnessing one of country's most important day has somewhat disappeared.
GONE ARE the days when people were very eager to attend Independence Day functions and were proud of being the part of the celebration. At one time, people tried to emulate the examples of their great leaders. Hope, enthusiasm and love for motherland was the order of the day. Now, the charm and excitement of witnessing one of country’s most important days has somewhat disappeared.

Today, a majority of masses get enthusiastic about Independence Day/Republic Day as it has been declared as national holiday by the government. The government has to call students from all the schools, making mandatory to attend the celebration or function and government servants must be directed to attend these celebrations essentially. If the schools are not directed to bring all the students, surely we shall see the gathering on a lower side. It seems Indians lack sense of patriotism. With captivating and eye-catching entertainment channels, the direct telecast of Independence Day functions is like a slow process for the Indians.

Now, question is that why people have lost their interest to take part in country’s national day celebration? Why they have started treating it like merely a holiday?

Today, our leaders have been mistaking ‘roguery’ for ‘success’ selfishness, corruption and vote banks are no more domination of one party, it has become a social phenomenon now. It is one of the big reasons that this national event has lost its luster and meaning. Since decades, Indians had been paying attention to the speeches of their leaders on all occasions, who have been making mostly false promises for their personal interests. Now, the common people have lost faith in their leaders.

World have seen our preparation of Commonwealth Games, surrounding with controversies that have hurt the nation with shame and disappointment. One wonders, what happened to the Gandhian principles of truth and honesty that our country was founded upon. It seems our politicians and bureaucrats have no value for honesty at all.

It is time the systems are revaluated and the old concepts of truth, honesty and hard work brought back into the ethical system to bring the pride back among citizens.
