DISASTER PREPAREDNESS training programme, followed by a mock drill was organised by the Divisional Administration Kashmir in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for 150 Police Commandos, at Police Training School Manigam.
Aamir Ali, Coordinator Disaster Management Kashmir & OSD with Divisional Commissioner Kashmir gave safety tips to the elite commandos. Dr. G. M. Dar HOD Disaster Management IMPA explained, in detail, about the disaster scenario of the State and the various precautionary measures that are required to be taken to prevent damages due to disasters. Earlier M.S. Punnu (SSP) Principal Police Training School Manigam welcomed the experts and urged the commandos to actively participate in the training programme as Police is usually the first responder at the site of any disaster.
Later a mock drill was organized where the elite commandos, displayed their acquired skills and were shown how to handle any disaster situation. One of the Commandos, Nazir, said that in the event of any disaster, the priority is to save maximum lives and ensure minimum damage. If all policemen are well versed with commando training and operations, much time can be saved. The commandos have been hand picked from J&K Police and are given special training to tackle any situation. It requires a lot of energy, exercises and special diets to become a commando.
The training was organized under the Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project, with the intention of establishing a better trained and better equipped and specialized force to combat any situation in the event of any disaster. Before their induction into commando battalions, the young policemen are given basic commando training, physical conditioning, weapon training, martial arts, commando tactics, explosive and combat engineering, field craft, road, run and walk, fire and combat shooting, map reading, jungle warfare at Police Training School Manigam.
