Discovering care and cure
This informative documentary film by Siyi Wu depicts the integration of traditional Chinese medicine in the US.

Healthcare is at the forefront of daily news media topics in the US. It is often the linchpin in persuading the voting public which direction/candidate to choose. Because this is directly tied in to the policy makers who measure out healthcare offered to Americans, many have taken it upon themselves to be educated about the benefits as well as the detriments of modern medicine.

The documentary Care & Cure presents one woman's exploration of traditional Chinese medicine in the United States. American alternative medicine practitioner Ruth McCarty provides life-changing care at children's hospital of Orange County for children facing difficult diagnoses as she struggles to find a place for her practice within the world of Western medicine. This intense and informative documentary received awards and was an official selection at such prestigious events as the AltFF Alternative Film Festival (Short film Award Winner), Awareness Festival, Beaufort International Film Festival, and the Chinese American Film Festival. The film has recently received distribution from Adler & Associates Entertainment, meaning that it's revealing information will be more readily available to the public.

Dr Ruth McCarthy is a strong proponent for the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine because she experienced it first-hand. As an artist who broke her neck and subsequently found that Western medicine lacked the cures possessed by that of China's approach, she travelled to China to study this practice. McCarthy now specializes in integrating complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) into traditional medical care, providing a holistic treatment plan which addresses both a children's body and spirit. She has established a Chinese medical department at CHOC Children's Hospital in Orange. Recent changes to the insurance laws have led to a drastic decrease in reimbursements for this forward thinking approach. The creators of this documentary hope that bearing witness to its benefits will prompt society to investigate more deeply in their own lives.

McCarthy is at the forefront of presenting alternative and holistic treatment to needy patients but without her work receiving proper exposure, it is in danger of fading away. Filmmaker Siyi Wu (known professionally as Dora) took up championing the doctor's work by creating the documentary Care & Cure. A native of China, Dora understands that traditional Chinese medicine offers a supplement to the western medical approach rather than a complete replacement. Simply supplying the possibility of a different approach offers the freedom which the US was founded upon. The irony here is that it is a filmmaker from China who reminds us of this. As a professional who has worked on numerous films internationally, the merging of the best of Chinese and Western traits is a natural concept for Dora. She relates, "The target audience ranges from those who have not found a cure in modern medicine up to would-be directors of hospitals or clinics. Dr. McCarthy is an ideal focus for the film as she has both been a recipient and deliverer of the benefits of this medical practice. Because she is American, she has not been predisposed to accept traditional Chinese medicine and therefore judged the effects in a non-biased scenario." Care & Cure editor Emma Wang notes, "Dora's passion in storytelling is what makes her such a great director. Editing a documentary is quite difficult because the message has to be clear throughout the entire process; Dora communicates with a clarity that is always present." Great films are made by passionate people about passionate people; both components of this are easily seen when you view Care and Cure.
