THE DISNEY Interactive Media Group has purchased fast-growing social game developer Playdom for$763.2 million that is based in California. The deal includes a total consideration of $563.2 million. Playdom has been around for just two-and-a-half years and has raised a total of US$76m in funding.
Playdom is one of a cluster of tech start-ups that make simple online games, known for games such as Mobsters, Sorority Life and Wild Ones. Playdom and its 15 development studios will become part of the Disney Interactive Media Group.
Mountain View, California, based social game developer Playdom announced a content partnership with Disney’s ESPN sports cable channel in May.
Disney CEO Robert Iger said, "This acquisition furthers our strategy of allocating capital to high-growth businesses that can benefit from our many characters, stories and brands, delivering them in a creatively compelling way to a new generation of fans on the platforms they prefer."
Walt Disney Co aims to take a leading role in the fast-growing market for games played on sites such as Facebook and MySpace with the deal with Playdom. The Disney Interactive Media Group has hinted it would lend its brands and characters to future Playdom releases.
