DUSSEHRA OR Vijaya Dashami, is observed on the tenth day in Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month (Oct17). Also, famous Mysore Dussehra and Kullu Dussehra culminate on this day. Ramlila too ends on this day. Durga Visarjan is performed on Vijaya Dashami and effgies of Ravana are burnt in theevening on this day.

In South India, the regional names of Durga Puja is Vidyaramba and is celebrated in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.The tenth day or Vijayadasami is considered most auspicious in South India as beginning of study for children by starting to learn the alphabets by starting with the first few letters. Children are given instructions to write the first few alphabets on rice or sand to be initiated into the world of learning and knowledge.
This event is called 'Ezhuthinu Iruthu' and according to custom only after this ceremony child becomes entitled to write and read formally. Also, adults write on sand and also read a few sentences from sacred books on this day. Similarly, the craftsmen, professionals and other skilled workers do some work using their tools, instruments and implements.Thus, Dussehra has many hues and celebrated in different forms in our diverse and colourful country. In respect of India, as the great sage Sri Ramakrishna has rightly said, "There can be as many spiritual paths as there are spiritual aspirants, and as many Gods as there are devotees."
