Karunanidhi led DMK-Congress won all the five assembly seats in the by-elections, but in neighbouring Karnataka, Congress is all set for a drubbing as most of the seats are likely to go to BJP and JD-S.
KARUNANIDHI LED DMK-Congress combine in Tamil Nadu had reasons to smile as the coalition won all the five assembly seats in the by-elections, the results of which were announced on Friday (August 21). However, in neighbouring Karnataka, Congress is all set for a drubbing as most of the seats are likely to go to BJP and JD-S.
In Tamil Nadu, the DMK candidates won assembly seats in Cumbum, Burgur and Ilayankudi, whereas partner Congress planted its flag in Srivaikuntam and Thondamuthur. The ruling coalition had a cakewalk in the by-elections as opposition AIADMK and its associates MDMK and PMK boycotted the polls, saying that it was not possible to have free and fair polls under the ruling dispensation.
In Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati lead BSP won the Moradabad seat and was leading in Bidhuna and Malihabad, whereas RLD won the Morena seat. In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee lead Trinamul Congress won Bowbazar and Sealdah seats, which were earlier held by partner Congress.
In Karnataka, where five assembly seats went to by-polls, the results was a mix bag with ruling BJP opposition Janata Dal (Secular) winning two seats each, whereas one seat went to Congress.
Ruling BJP, however, suffered a major setback in the polls with Housing minister V Somanna losing the high-profile Govindarajanagara constituency in Bangalore city.
