DMK to stay out of UPA Government
M Karunanidhi, the DMK chief, has announced that his party would stay out of the new government but would continue to provide support from outside. He took the decision as his demand for certain ministerial berths was not entertained
AFTER A tussle with the Congress High Command regarding the berths of ministry, the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) party, one of the major allies of the Congress has declared that they would stay out of the new government but would continue to provide support from outside.
M Karunanidhi, the DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, expressed his decision in front of the media persons in New Delhi today (May 22), before starting for Chennai.
The Congress leadership offered a formula to Karunanidhi regarding the ministerial allocation but the Tamil Nadu CM said that he could not agree with the proposal as an individual. The entire matter would be discussed among the executive party members of the DMK.
Manmohan Singh, who would be sworn in as the Prime Minister of India today evening (May 22), would keep all the portfolios safe, proposed for the DMK till a final decision is reached. An internal meeting among the executive members of the DMK would take place in Chennai today evening over this issue.
DMK demanded cabinet berths for MK Azhagiri, son of Karunanidhi and the DMK supremo’s daughter Kanimozhi. Karunanidhi also demanded cabinet berth for Dayanadhi Maran, his grand nephew. The DMK chief also sought minister of state berths for some other DMK MPs, including T R Baalu and A Raja.
Janardhan Dwivedi, the Congress spokesman finally stated that DMK was demanding too much and such a demand was not ‘reasonable’. Manmohan Singh is not keen to give any kind of ministerial berths to Baalu and Raja, which brings the wrath of DMK.
Reportedly, both Sonia Gandhi and Singh discussed over this issue today morning as well. DMK demanded ministries like shipping, surface transport, communications and environment. DMK won in 18 LS seats in Tamil Nadu in the 15th LS election, followed by AIADMK (9 seats) and INC (8 seats).
