DMRC on standard gauge: This is the right track
It refers to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) introducing new standard-gauze metro-trains for its new sections starting from Inderlok-Mundka and later on Central Secretariat-Badarpur and Airport-Express routes.
IT REFERS to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) introducing new standard-gauge metro-trains for its new sections starting from Inderlok-Mundka and later on Central Secretariat-Badarpur and Airport-Express routes. It is a well-known fact that DMRC Managing Director Dr. Elattuvalapil Sreedharan had justified opinion to have standard-gauge for Metro Rail from the very beginning of project.

Standard-gauge system has numerous technical and commercial advantages over broad-gauge. Standard-gauge is the most widely used system globally giving a more competitive option to select imported accessories mainly coaches, with their spare parts more easily available. Technically also, standard-gauge has more flexible turning of coaches.

Overall installation, maintenance and operational costs at standard-gauze is much-much less in comparison to that at broad gauge. But idea of veteran pioneer was turned down by senior officers at Railway Ministry only because of personal rivalry. Dissenting officers had a totally irrelevant argument that since normal rail system in India is on broad-gauge, therefore metro-rail should also follow the same as if metro-rail coaches were also to run on normal rail-service! However platforms for standard-gauge trains should have also been constructed to handle trains for eight coaches rather than six coaches keeping in view future need to increase train-capacity.

Union government should bring a white paper on the aspect for taking costly and inappropriate decision to put most of DMRC routes on broad-gauge publicly naming the culprit ones responsible to harm national interests and exchequer despite stiff resistance from the main operational person Dr. Elattuvalapil Sreedharan.

.Wat all I wanna say is already said by 'MPS'. Here we should not look out for what is best for specific. We should look for what is best for the country. India operates world's largest independent rail network in the world. And increasing incompatability, in my opinion, is any way a good option to go with. And as I stated earlier, India operates largest rail network in the world, thus it proves that market share is dominant by Broad Gauge. And if again one wants more clarification, come to delhi and travel in both gauged rails. You'll yourself realize which one is better. Broad Gauge, Older and New Bombardier ones (totally sound proof, which are too good except that yellow light and cranky speaker voice), are a way far better than new standard guage trains.

.There are many shrrdharan in our country who are silently contributing the nation. That is why our country is still growing up with all odds.
.Sreedharan is even better than narayanamurthy and ratan tata. Because he did all this out of his own without seeking any gains. He just have 30,000 salary and most of it goes to charity. He lives on his pension of 10,000. This is peanuts for a person handling billions of $ of projects If india had 10 sreedharans we would have 10 PSUs like DMRC. wish it happens one day
.There have been many arguments over technical and economic advantages of different gauges of railway track, but basically, they boil down to this: the narrower the guage, the cheaper the track, and the wider the track the more stable the train. However these considerations pale into insignificance compared to the advantages standardisation of track offers. Most of the world may use "standard guage" which is the original gauge that the first train ever built - Stevenson's Rocket happened to use, but the reality is that in India, Indian broad gauge is the standard. Indian broad gauge was adopted in India in order to give trains greater stability in typhoon conditions. San Francisco's BART metro system uses Indian broad gauge in order to provide greater stability against derailing in earthquake conditions. The bottom line is that the choice of standard gauge for the DMRC metro is in my opinion a mistake in the long run. India is large enough to support a self sufficient train building industry, so off the shelf import of trains is not as important as in smaller countries with less extensive rail networks. The use on standard gauge will prevent linking of the networks with India's broad gauge network, and will prevent standard broad gauge track construction and maintenance equipment from being used on DMRC's track. This will in the long run make DMRC's nework much more expensive to maintain since DMRC will have to import and use track maintenance equipment that cannot be used anywhere but DMRC's limited length of track, and will prevent DMRC from expanding in future by linking into a suburban railway line. A very bad decision in my opinion.
.Personally, I have great regard and respect for Dr. Sreedharan; in my opinion he ranks very much equivalent to personalities like Dr. Abdul Kalam, Mr. Narayan Murthy of Infosys, Mr. Ratan Tata of Tata Group some of the nobel lauretes. However, my personal unbiased opinion would be for a large populated country like India, uniformity in services rendered should take precedence on such large projects; however, if big benefits are going to accrue by changing the current unform system, then let's welcome the change. Therefore, we need to exactly find out all the advantages and demerits for changing to this system as suggested by the writer. It is worthwhile to mention here that the President of the United States of America, Dr. Barrack Obama is banking heavily on reforming the existing Railway system in the US with better quality and speed which would entail a big infrastructure investment creating millions of jobs for the US people, which is the need of the hour for that country. Therefore, by changing the system as suggested, is going to bring in tremendous improvement ON ALL FRONTS, it should be made to welcome. It is high time, Government of India, must make it mandatory to introduce metro rail in all the cities where the population is more than 10 lakhs; given the Indian mindset, an average worker employed with Metro Rail will serve the organisation throughout his life span because, I am given to understand, employees working in Metro Rail are genuinely deriving great job satisfaction. Metro Rail has proved that it is by far one of the best JOB CREATORS in the country on a mass scale immensely benefitting millions of commuters on a daily basis, besides enhancing the image of the country multifold!!! By the way, modernising the Indian Railways on a world scale is again the need of the hour - hopefully Madam Mamta Banerjee will do everything to ensure pending projects move fast at a rapid pace. Thank you, CJ
