DMRC places order for 76 new coaches valued at $120 million
Traveling in Delhi Metro, specially on the Jehangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line will no longer be a nightmare as the Delhi Metro has placed an order for 76 new coaches valued at $120m with the Germany based Bombardier.
IN ORDER to decongest the Gurgaon line, the Delhi Metro placed an order of 76 extra coaches valued at $120 million or 84 million Euros. The new coaches would be provided by Germany based Bombardier and would be subsequently added to the existing six coach trains taking the number to eight.
Post the delivery of the new coaches, 74 new coaches would be added to the fleet of existing six coach metro’s to convert them into eight coach trains on one of the busiest Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre sector. On a daily basis, at least seven lakh people travel on this sector. The remaining two coaches will be used in the four coach metro.
Prior to this, the Delhi Metro had placed an order with Mitsubishi-Rotem-Mitsubishi for 136 metro coaches whose delivery will start by September 2012 and will end by December 2013.
The production of the addition new Metro coaches will take place at Bombardier’s plant in Savli in Gujarat in September 2012 and will be delivered by May 2013. An official from the company was quoted saying that the contract is follow-on to the orders for 114 vehicles announced in mid-2010. After the delivery, Delhi Metro will boast of running the 614 Movia metro cars, which is also considered as one of the largest in the world.
