PADYATRAS BY politicians in India is an old trend mainly followed to make an impression on people. Latest politician in news for a padyatra is Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who started a foot march in Uttar Pradesh yesterday to make common cause with farmers over land acquisition. This foot march is a campaign against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. Some parties have criticized it as a ‘political stunt’ but congress party describes it as ‘firsthand knowledge’.

Gone are the days when leaders took padyatra for national issues and welfare, they now do so for building an image and personal gain. Now the question arises are these foot marches going to amaze people?

“Yes, when people like Rahul Gandhi do this, definitely it attracts lots of people,” said college student.

“People come to see his cute face; I have no idea about his political experience,” added another student.

In India, it is common for leaders to work for their constituency and its vested interests, despite the fact that it risks losing their credibility as a national leader. There are several major issues plaguing the nation, but hardly any leader is putting sincere efforts to solve them. Land acquisition is a national problem while Rahul Gandhi is projecting it as a local issue because the state comes under another party rule. When land was acquired in states ruled by Congress and its allies, no one from Congress party was seen fighting for the people, like in Jaitiapur where people were against land acquisition for the nuclear project. The urban and rural voters understand the importance and need to change leaders and their foot marches. Merely listening to them is not going to work unless leaders realize their promises honestly. The need of the hour is that India wish for leaders like Mahatma Gandhi to amend her image.
