Doda school awaits up-gradation since 1895
Located in the heart of the Doda town, Government City Middle School Doda was established in 1895 and has served the students of the locality for over 118 years but ironically the school is yet to be upgraded. Pertinently, many primary, middle and high schools, established years after the Government City Middle School Doda, have been upgraded.

Besides having 39 Higher Secondary Schools, 95 High Schools, 12 Lower High Schools, 415 Middle Schools, 709 Primary Schools and five Kerndriya Vidyalyas in entire Doda district, Government Middle School Doda is still waiting to draw the attention of the authorities, it deserves.

However, the government besides having various Central and State sponsored schemes for providing educational facilities and logistics, has failed to upgrade the oldest school in the area.

“As far as I can remember, this school is in the same condition and nothing has changed since the time I first stepped into this school as a kid,” a local resident and former student of the school Sibt-e-Raza Hamdani said.

He further added when he was a student of this school, the condition of the school was better. “The school has regressed due to the apathy of the authorities over years. Even the enrollment of the students in the school has declined,” Hamdani informed.

Raja Jaffer Nazir who works for child educational rights in the Chenab Valley said government needs to revisit its educational policy and proper attention needs be given to upgrade the schools and make them functional which have been neglected for long now.

“One way to do this is through public-private partnership. There should be a periodic accreditation system where once every two years institutions would seek accreditation and the regulatory bodies would check if all norms are being followed, for it is often seen that once an approval comes from the authorities, institutions openly flout the norms,” he said.

Nazir added that the present education system established by the British rulers is very old and obsolete. The locals appealed the authorities to upgrade the Government City Middle School Doda and provide all the modern facilities so that it is restored to its past glory.
