The electronic media has become a preferred career choice for youth, not for its commitment to philanthropic reporting, but as a platform to cross the threshold into the world of television and glamour.
IN THE past few years, the media business has emerged as a gigantic and profitable stream. Switch on the TV and you'll find several news channels, in many cases 'gossip channels', begging for your judgement. You name them, and they are before you - Star News, NDTV, IBN7, India TV, Aaj Tak, Zee News, to name just a few channels.
The electronic media has become a preferred career choice for youth, not for its commitment to philanthropic reporting, but as a platform to cross the threshold into the world of television and glamour. Young graduates who opt for the electronic media, when asked about what role they want to take in the media, mostly respond that they wish to be before the camera or be an anchor of a news channel. They do not comprehend that there are other jobs in the electronic media such as production, assignment, guest co-ordination, and reporting. The most common question asked by the common viewer these days is: where is the news? Today's news channels seem to be all about gossip and hearsay. There is no news left - just exaggeration and sensationalism.
Channels have to somehow run the industry and for that they resort to screening scandals. If nothing, a news channel will telecast news about aliens, the devastation of the earth by 2010, a cat running after a dog, and other such inane stories. And as a matter of fact, people have developed a taste for such news. 'NEWS', which stands for north, south, east and west, has lost its purpose among such swindle and scandal. Now only a few government channels remain that really report the news but then their TRPs are so flat and people rarely switch over to them. In this world of showbiz, news has lost its purpose and the word 'news' is replaced by gossip. There is a need for a revolution; the industry is in need of sweeping modifications so that people are in a better position to know more about the news.
