Donald Trump Jr had met Russian lawyer during 2016 election campaign seeking information about 'Hillary Clinton'
As per a report in the New York Times, President Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr had agreed to meet a Russian lawyer with connections in Kremlin because he was promised information that could be potentially damaging about Donald Trump's rival candidate, Hillary Clinton, during the 2016 election campaign.

As per the report, Trump's campaign chairman at the time, Paul J Manafort, and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner also attended the meeting in question.

The meeting which has added the latest tryst to the Trump-Russian stories took place at Trump Tower on June 9, 2016.

The Russian lawyer with whom this meeting took place has been identified as Natalia Veselnitskaya.

Trump Junior, in a statement to the New York Times has confirmed that the meeting took place but said that the topic of the meeting, which lasted about 20 to 30 minutes, was actually the issue of adoption and not any topic related to the presidential election campaigns.

Donald Trump Jr has, in a statement, accepted that a meeting took place but has described the meeting as "a short introductory meeting" in which the people present in the meeting "primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children".

But reports from credible media houses such as the The Times and the New York Times make it clear that the agenda of the meeting was not limited to adoptions.

Whether Russia was in fact meddling with the US Presidential election campaign or not remains yet to be proven. But with the amount of information already unearthed by the United States media and with the not-so-clear statements issued by Donald Trump and his administration, the whole issue demands an impartial and independent investigation to reassert the credibility of Donald Trump as the elected leader of the people of the United States of America.
