Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un come face-to-face at Singapore Summit
On Tuesday in a historic US-North Korea summit US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un came face-to-face in Singapore. The summit is historic because it marks the first ever meeting between a sitting US President and a North Korean leader.

The two leaders warmly shook hands for a good 13 seconds before heading for a roughly 40-minute one-to-one meeting.

The proceedings of the summit were concluded with Kim and Trump signing a "comprehensive" document in which while North Korea reaffirmed its pledge to denuclearise the Korean Peninsula, the United States pledged "security guarantees" to North Korea.

A joint statement issued after the summit in Singapore read, "President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula."

Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is the formal name of North Korea.

The statement further said that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean officials would follow-up negotiations "at the earliest possible date".

However, neither does the document mention how denuclearisation will be achieved nor does it make any mention of the international sanctions that have crippled North Korea's economy owing to its sustained nuclear programme. Moreover, there is also no mention about the signing of a formal peace treaty between the two sides.
