Serena Williams partnered with her sister Venus won the women's doubles final (6-2, 6-2), against Liezel Huber and Cara Black. It was a double win for Serena as she had already won the heart of millions of her fans by issuing an apology statement.
IT WAS a day of double win for Serena Williams at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday (September 14). She won the doubles final (6-2, 6-2) in straight sets against Liezel Huber and Cara Black with her sister Venus. But she had already won the heart of millions of her fans even before the match started by issuing an apology statement in the form of an amendment to her earlier press statement of Sunday (September 13). In her apology statement, she has apologised to the line judge, Kim Clijsters (her opponent on Saturday night's semi final match) and the United States Tennis Association. In her earlier press statement, she had acknowledged responsibility for her angry outburst during Saturday’s match at one of the lines women.
As quoted on US Open’s official website, her statement of apology is “I want to amend my press statement of yesterday, and want to make it clear as possible - I want to sincerely apologise first to the lines woman, Kim Clijsters, the USTA and mostly tennis fans everywhere for my inappropriate outburst. I'm a woman of great pride, faith and integrity and I admit when I'm wrong. I need to make it clear to all young people that I handled myself inappropriately and it's not the way to act -- win or lose, good call or bad call in any sport, in any manner.
I like to lead by example. We all learn from experiences both good and bad, I will learn and grow from this and be a better person as a result.”
She has also apologised to her fans through her blog site and the social networking medium Twitter.
Through Twitter she has expressed as follows :” I want to sincerely apologize FIRST to the lines woman, Kim Clijsterst, USTA and mostly tennis fans everywhere. Thank you all for your support “
Her inappropriate behaviour on court cost her this year’s US Open Singles title, a fine of 10,000 dollar for unsportsman like conduct and an additional 500 dollar for smashing her racket with a further possibility of more fine and suspension from next year’s US Open tournament.
