THE INCESTUOUS relationship of the Ego, attached to the Body, gives birth to a daughter called Desire. When she is grown up and attains puberty, she is mated with Hatred. The child of this marriage, nursed by its grand parent, Pride, the father of Ego, is the reaction to pleasure and pain (the duality of good and bad). This monster, fed on Hope, gets fattened and is violently opposed to Courage and Self-control - and being always drunk in Discontent, seeks delight in the chamber of Sensuality. Its (Duality’s) sole work is to spread the disease of Doubt, without which it cannot find its survival and in the process cuts out for us many a by-path of evil deeds. Thus it is that a person, being misguided, moves in the jungle of worldly life and bears through it heavy blows of misery.
This diseased family is known to exist and prosper through eternity. Like infection, it survives by afflicting the human mind and spreads its tentacles without our knowledge. You must have observed in practical life that the doubting Thomas is always a man with a strong ego. Have you ever seen a fool or an idiot who is humble? See the happy countenance of contentment that sits ever so lightly on the face of a man of humility.
Unhappy people often drive away the very people whose support they need, thereby worsening their depression and intensifying their need for support. Misery may love company but company clearly does not love misery. It is wisely said that there are persons who cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go. Someone's arrival can be the cause of misery vanishing, whereas, for some other's, their going is the very cause of happiness. Thus, in order to be happy, which has always been our seeking, we must consciously divorce ourselves from this unholy alliance.
Once the relationship map is known, it becomes to that extent easier to do so by a reversal of the process. Mind, that feeds on doubt can be consciously made to become more trusting, so that we are now somewhat less discontent and the false hope that we keep nourishing all through, begins to dissipate. The duality of good and bad is resolved to its being integrated into one of acceptability. So what? When it is good, good, and when it is bad, bad. Can we do anything by desiring them away? No. So accept it for the time being, knowing that it will not last. This is the technique of killing desire. Desire, thus aborted from taking birth, the entire family is made to become extinct. Remember, the key to happiness is desirelessness. It may sound very contradictory and materialistically, too sacrilegious but it is true. Meditate on this.
The question that still remains to be answered is how to make the mind more trusting? Isn’t it surprising that the mind that doubts everything else does not ever doubt itself? So begin from where you stand at the moment: Start by doubting away your doubts and be assured that everything will fall in its rightful place.
Go, give it out a try ... and tell me ... if it is not true!
