Downpour brings a plethora of problems
Commuters spent hours on the roads negotiating the jams. Residents of several areas rued the poor maintenance of traffic scenario and roads. The school going children were also stranded in jams while going back to homes.

THE HEAVY downpour, apart from making weather pleasant, wreaked havoc on city roads, which got inundated and slippery resulting in traffic jams at several places. From various streets, waste could not be cleared till the filling of the report as the rain also lashed the city at night. The water-logging resulted in massive traffic snarls at various crossings last Monday.

Commuters spent hours on the roads negotiating the jams. The residents of several areas rued the poor maintenance of traffic scenario and roads. The school going children were also stranded in jams while going back to homes. Nitin, a bank executive informed that after waiting for more than 30 minutes for the rain to stop he left home for a meeting in Civil Lines around 2pm. “After three hours, I only managed to reach Preetam Nagar due to heavy jam at Dhoomanganj area,” he said.

Those using public transport were worst hit. People commuting by foot remained a harried lot due to chocked drains, slippery roads and traffic snarls at every crossing. The heavy downpour in the city exposed its poor drainage system once again. Almost all the localities including posh ones like Civil, After Lines, Kareli, Gausnagar, Meerapur, Attrsuiya, Dariyabad, Mutthiganj, Allahpur, Baghambari Gaddi, Matlyara Road, Sarvodya Nagar, Puda Padayain, Alopibagh and adjoining areas were flooded, It was quite difficult to move on the roads due to slippery condition.

The condition of the main road in Gausnagar is highly pathetic. Amir, a resident of Alopibagh said that we have to be very cautious while moving on the road of the locality. Several people got injured due to slippery conditions. Another resident of George Town rued that her daughter had to face problems while going to school. The school bus does not come there due to the damaged main road. The problem aggravates at Babu Tri section where a slight shower is enough to make the road slippery. Similarly, the condition of roads, which were dug up, for laying of underground sewage pipelines, further deteriorated due to rain. The slush has made it difficult for the commuters to move.
