Many people have unfortunately turned this as a great matter of pride, prestige and honour as they often use to narrate everyone that they have got so many expensive gifts and even confess of getting a bulk of cash from the bride’s family that more often boost the dowry hoopla.

The history of dowry system is very ancient and slowly and slowly it has become an awful custom. As a result, the voluntary giving of money and expensive gift has become a common practice these days.

Although India is witnessing an incredible contribution of women as a workforce making them economically sound and independent but their exploitation still remains an adage. The merciless killing in the form of female foeticide is just one of the staggering consequences of this social evil causing a serious threat as their battle of survival continues.

It has such a deep impact that many of us have tagged maiden girls as a mammoth burden to their respective families. The big question ahead is what we can do? How to eliminate this social evil, which is more or less had forced women to live under terror and causing serious threat even on their identity, which is quite evident by the alarming difference between the sex ratio in the recent times. The increasing number of crimes against women shows the declining moral and ethical values of our society.

We have just made an act called 'the Dowry Act', making both giving and taking dowry illegal but its enforcement is still way behind and sometime we can just wonder that, is the dowry act hold its ground?

One need to understand that culture over the years has to change. Unfortunately, the mindset of the majority is still outdated. This is the root cause of the problem. This issue needs a lateral thinking rather than having fixed ideas in order to stop the violence and the discriminating behaviour towards women.

If God has to be given a gender than it should be female– the symbol of nurturing and endless love.
