WHILE WOMEN occupy positions in government offices, educational institutes, business organizations and other social agencies, they are also victims of many social evils in society such as dowry.
Dowry is something the parents of the bride give to the bridegroom to ensure security for their daughter. It’s mainly in the form of cash, property, and jewelry, etc. In other words it’s a kind of help for the newly married couple.
The custom of dowry has been in vogue in Indian civilization but with the advancement of time it has taken an ugly turn. It is not only disturbing but shocking to find the cases of bride burning in headlines of every newspaper.
Nowadays dowry is one of the unspoken requirements in Indian society and marriage rituals, Many women are ill-treated, burned, tortured, murdered, killed, only for this reason by husbands and in-laws.
Marriages are set only when the bride’s father is able to give a proper dowry. Bridegrooms and his family somestimes demand dowry if the bridegroom is a doctor, engineer or works for the government.
Simply pu, boys are "blank cheques" for their parents. One major problem with Indian society is that if the person doesn't demand dowry, the bride's parents think he might be a 'defective product'.
The dowry system is a matter of shame and a slur on the Indian soceity. In no other country an evil like dowry can be found. It reflect the prejudice against women.
This system underlines the fact women in India are not treated equally. There is no limit to the greed of in-laws of bride even after the marriage. This social evil has already taken a heavy toll on womens' life in country.
Eradicating dowry from its root is only possible when government and women themselves take initiative against this evil. Besides, the government must take effective social measures against people those who practice this system, an they should be socially boycotted. Moreover, women's organizations must hold demonstrations against such people.
