Dr S Y Quraishi to take charge as CEC on July 30
Dr S Y Quraishi an Indian Administrative Service officer has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner of India (CEC) and he will take charge of the office on July 30, 2010. He will the first Muslim CEC of India.
DR S Y Quraishi an Indian Administrative Service officer has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner of India (CEC) and he will take charge of the office on July 30, 2010. Dr Quraishi, born on July 11, 1947, is an IAS officer of 1971 batch from Haryana Cadre and has done his Phd in Communication and Social Marketing.
The new CEC will replace incumbent Navin Chawla, who was in the same post since June 30, 2006. Dr Shahabuddin Yakoob Quraishi will be the first Muslim CEC of India.
The duty of a CEC is to scrutiny the election expenses of candidates, electoral roll preparations and demarcation of constituencies with nomination papers and to check the allotment of symbols to the parties and recognition and finally to conduct the polls.
The government of India issued the notification for his appointment and he will be appointed for less than two years. He will retire on 2012. According to the Law Ministry, the appointment of Quraishi is under the pursuance of clause 2 of Article 324 of the Indian Constitution.
Dr Quraishi also worked for the Sports Ministry and NACO. Now after the appointment of Dr S Y Quraishi, the post of third Election Commissioner is empty and the name of V S Sampath is on priority for the post.
