Drug addiction among youths in Punjab becoming a serious issue
As observed from various media reports it looks like youths in Punjab are getting addicted to drugs. One report points out that around 73.5% of Punjab's youths are addicted to drugs.

A multi million drug nexus operating under the patronage of big wigs are exploiting the youths of Punjab. Since Punjab is located in the border area, drug agents from across the border (directly and indirectly) are luring Punjab's youths toward drugs and it looks like there are many success stories for these agents.

The situation appears precarious. Therefore, it is high time, concerned authorities must study the problem in detail and do everything to ensure that this menace is curtailed or abolished completely. Involvement of social scientists, law enforcement agencies, specialists who help to cure drug addicts, religious leaders all need to debate the issue as to how to reform the youth of Punjab for the better.

Opening up of Drug Rehabilitation Centers on a big scale looks like one of the best options. Additionally, SAARC countries should keep the issue of misuse of drugs in their prime agenda and India should impress upon the other SAARC countries to control the menace of drug trafficking from their territory.

Based on some intensive research done for the past 40 years on drug rehabilitation program, the following have been identified as key elements associated while reforming drug addicts.

  • Addiction to drugs impacts the function of the brain the affected person, which can alter his behavior. Guilt associated with drug related behavior often keeps people from successful addiction recovery.

  • Successful treatment programs provide for all aspects of a person's life, not just a specific addiction. Learning new skills and sharing emotional troubles may help with recovery.

  • It is essential that one remains in treatment and comply with follow up care. Drug addiction is a chronic disorder; some doctors have even compared addiction with asthma or hypertension.

  • Drug addiction is often closely related to mental illness. A rehab program that can deal with a dual diagnosis is essential in these cases.

  • Treatment plans should be re-evaluated and altered on an ongoing basis to seek continuous improvement. In most cases, the individual struggling with addiction should have the opportunity to prove some feedback.

Based on the above, the issue needs to be tackled on a fast track basis by all concerned. Additionally, all the gates from where drugs are entering Punjab territory should be blocked with the help of law enforcement agencies so that the supply side either becomes nil or very scarce.
