DTC refusal to provide buses sends parents in a tizzy
A circular issued by Mothers International School situated at Aurobindo Marg in New Delhi has sent shivers down the spine of parents as the school has announced the withdrawal of transport facilities to the students.
A CIRCULAR issued by Mothers International School situated at Aurobindo Marg in New Delhi has sent shivers down the spine of parents as the school has announced the withdrawal of transport facilities to the students. As per the directive of the school management, there would be no school transport facilities from April 1 onwards as the new session begins.

The reason being given for this move is ostensibly the expiry of the transport contract which the school had with Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). For the last ten years, the Delhi government undertaking had been providing its buses for transport of school children, but it's refusal to continue the contract, has led to this situation, claims the school.

However, this order has sent the parents in a tizzy and many of them are worried as to what would they do once the school opens up for the next session on April 1. Moreover, the parents are also confused about the future as they do not know, what course of action would be taken by the school management.

Dr Rajeev Ghai, one of the parents, while speaking to merinews said that the circular issued by the school management surprised him. He said that for the past many years, the children have been availing school transport and it would be almost impossible to arrange private transport for the students.

“At least 1500 students of Mothers International are availing the facility and it would be very difficult for the parents to make available private transport to the students”, he said.

The refusal of the Delhi Transport Corporation to renew contracts with private schools is being related with purported move to phase out the Blue Line buses in the national capital. It is being said that these school buses would now be used to ensure that the phasing out of Blue Lines does not cause much pain to the commuters in general.

However, the move by the DTC has come under fire from the harried parents, who want the government undertaking to continue the service as they deem it to be safer as compared to private operators.

Vandana Malik, a parent said that the DTC must continue the service as school children would face lot of trouble in case the buses are taken off. She said that if this situation comes to pass, there would be 1500 more cars driving to the Mothers International school from April 1 thus adding to enormous chaos in the area, which already is a very crowded intersection.

“Mothers International has always favoured that the students should use school buses for transport and this policy saves both energy as well as ensures security for the students”, she said, adding that the school management will have to come out with a solution for the problem.

Some parents argue that since the buses do not stay in school for the entire day, the DTC can allow the school to use the same. The parents are confused over the decision of the government undertaking as the school management had increased the fees for the usage of the buses.

Meanwhile, the circular issued by the school management said, “We are prompted to share our anxiety with the parents, regarding this development which would affect nearly fifteen hundred children of our school and cause untold misery to students and parents in the ensuing summer weeks. In the meantime we request you to kindly make alternate arrangements for the transportation of your child to and from school, for the new academic session, 1st April, 2010 onwards. While we are taking this serious matter up directly with the DTC as well as with other Authorities, we would like to keep you informed of the further developments. We hope that our joint efforts would bear fruit, and that the DTC shall agree to continue the Bus Service without interruption.”
