‘SHY GUY’ is what you would call him at first. Wait till the ice breaks and you get to see the philosopher, hero and fiery speaker within. A knowledgeable candidate with an envious spirit of patriotism and willingness to do something for the welfare of the students— this is what Vasu Rukhar (Ballot No5) is all about.
This hardworking candidate is contesting the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections after six long years of dedicated association with the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Rukhar has been actively participating in student welfare activities of the Delhi University for the past six years and has left no stone unturned in voicing the concerns of students ever since he stepped into mainstream political activity. For two consecutive years, he was elected President of Satyawati College and has lived up to his promises, which according to him are not meant to be broken.
At present, Rukhar is pursuing M.A in Buddhism and feels that Delhi University is one of the most dynamic universities in the country. From going on hunger strikes for the welfare of students to fighting against rash driving on the part of blue line buses, Rukhar has never shied away from promoting the interests of Delhi University students. We caught up with this young, charismatic student-politician amidst the election paraphernalia…
Q: How has your experience been in Delhi University so far?
Rukhar: I have spent about six years in this prestigious university that has embraced scholars from all parts of the globe with great warmth. Delhi University is indeed the best university of our great nation and my love of and attachment to it has only grown in all these years.
Q: What do you think needs to be done for the welfare of the students?
Rukhar: There are many things that need to be done for the students. Firstly, we must come together and fight all prejudices against race, caste and creed; we should love and respect our fellow-students as people / part of the same family. Then we need to tackle various other issues that are part of the university. One of the foremost issues is that of student hostels. The number of students in Delhi University has increased in the past few years but the number of hostels has remained the same. I think, the university administration needs to pull its socks up and do something about it. Secondly, we are asking the administration to do something about the internal assessment criteria and express clarity on how the students are being marked. Other than this, we are pleading for Metro passes for all Delhi University students and starting youth specials in the campus, particularly the south campus.
Q: What other campus issues need attention?
Rukhar: One of the primary issues, which need immediate attention, is eve-teasing and we want to make the Delhi University campus a safe zone for girls.
Q: What is your vote plea?
Rukhar: I just want the students to vote for a student who will voice their concerns and understand them. They must not vote thinking that I am a politician but must acknowledge that I am one among them, like them.
