Duvvuri Subbarao appointed as 22nd RBI governor
The Central government on Monday appointed finance secretary, Duvvuri Subbarao, as the 22nd governor of the RBI. He will take charge of the office after present governor, YV Reddy relinquishes the office on September 5.

DUVVURI SUBBARAO, the finance secretary of India was appointed as the 22nd governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by the Central government of India on Monday (September 1). He will take charge of the assigned responsibility from his predecessor, Yaga Venugopal Reddy on September 5, as the latter will relinquish the respected office on that same day.

D Subbarao, who is already 57, will serve as the RBI governor for three years only. An engineering graduate from the elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Kanpur, Subbarao topped the civil services examination in 1972 and was assigned the Andhra Pradesh cadre. After a prolonged period of 35 years of service, he became the finance secretary in May 2007. Prior to that, he served as the secretary of economic affairs under the same ministry. While deputed to the World Bank as the lead economist from 1999 to 2004, he successfully dealt with various issues of public finance in African and East Asian countries. Besides, he had also worked as the secretary to the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council before becoming the top bureaucrat in the finance ministry.

Subbarao completed his MS in economics from the Ohio State University and was a Humphrey Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He also completed his doctorate degree (PhD) from the Andhra University.
