Through the use of e-governance, many facilities and benefits can be extended to the citizens. Good governance can’t be achieved till we have effective ICT policies at the national level. In India there is no effective and sound ICT policy. In the absence of a coherent and well written ICT policy, the e-governance initiatives of India have failed to materialise. However, this is not the real setback for India. The real and very dangerous setback for India is that India has become a technologically bankrupt nation.

According to the ICT Trends of India 2009, “Indian efforts for streamlining use of ICT have further degraded from 2008. The year 2009 saw some major ICT pitfalls and bad decisions were made by the Government of India. Overall the year 2009 can be said to be ‘Blunder ICT Year’ of India”. Despite this warning in the year 2009, the Indian government did not mend its ways and India’s e-readiness has further fallen from previous position.

The chief reason for these successive failures is that the prime minister’s office (PMO) has given an unfair and unaccountable authority to the department of information and communication technology (DIT) India that is making bad and unproductive policy decisions.

It would be better if the PMO’s office wakes up and be aware of what is happening right below its nose and in front of its eyes.
