A MAJOR earthquake of 5.9 magnitude, which hit the south eastern part of Turkey on Monday, March 8, 2010 killed several people and injured many more. The quake struck Elazig province, and the village of Okcular. This area is prone to earthquakes. The earthquake brought down almost all the structures in the area as most of the houses there were made of mud and brick. Around 57 people have already been declared dead.
Dozens of aftershocks as strong as 5.7 magnitude have been felt. The depth of the quake was 10 kilo meters and most of the houses here were not designed to stand it. Since, this area is a mountainous area, its freezing cold for the residents who have lost almost everything and are now forced to spend the nights in the open. Already more then 70 people are reported to be buried under the deris. This area is not so highly populated so the damage or loss of lives is less.Relief work is on in full swing. Medical aid and food is being provided to the victims. However the larger question is why, even in already known, prone areas do they not have adequate preparation. Such areas need stronger construction to be able to stand the earthquakes as they come.
