Earth's environmental crisis - a man made disaster
Aberrations are the new norm of the global climate. Untimely rains, longer summers, unanticipated snow are only minor indications of the major environmental disaster waiting to happen. The heating up of our planet needs grass root level attention.
UNTIMELY RAIN and floods in Australia, heavy snow in USA especially in Washington D.C and other eastern parts of the country are only a few indications of the environmental crisis our planet is facing. Some air pollutants have reduced the capacity of the atmosphere to filter out the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Many scientists believe that these and other air pollutants have begun to change the climate around the world. Badly polluted air can harm crops and cause life-threatening illnesses. Water and soil crisis threaten the ability of farmers to grow enough food to feed the world's population. Not only floods and snow but earth quickening and tsunami have also disturbed human resources and life. Recently in Bulandshahar of UP, deep ditch like, hollow cracks, several kilometers long, appeared on the roads.

All living things exist in relationships we call the ecosystems. These ecosystems must be in harmony for our planet to have ecological balance. All the ecosystems of the earth are connected. Thus, any excess that affects any one part of the environment will also affect all others.

For example, dirty smoke from a power plant might appear to harm the atmosphere alone, but it also causes the destruction of the earth's thin layer of healthy, productive soil, where much of our food is grown. With infertile soil, farmers cannot grow necessary quantities of food to support the large global population.

Healthy soil depends on bacteria, fungi, and small animals to break down wastes in the soil and release nutrients. All these nutrients help plants to grow. Fertilizers and pesticides can limit the ability of soil organisms to process wastes. Consequently, farmers who overuse chemical fertilizers and pesticides can destroy their soil's productivity and potential.

Various human activities also damage soil. The irrigation of soil in dry areas with poor drainage can leave still water in fields. When this standing/still water evaporates, it leaves salt deposits behind, making the soil too salty for growing crops. Mining operations and smelting dirty, toxic or heavy metals also affects the environment.
Many scientists believe that acid /salty rain can also reduce soil fertility. Salt has great power to melt even the bones of human beings and heavy iron metals. All this makes earth more hollow and empty. Every year, people dispose billions of metric tons of solid waste. Industrial wastes account for a majority of the discarded material.

Solid waste from homes, offices, and stores is called municipal solid waste. It includes paper, plastic, bottles and cans, food scraps, and garden trimmings. Other waste consists of scrapped cars, scrap metal, leftover materials from agricultural processes, and mining wastes known as spoil. The handling of such waste is a great problem because most disposal methods damage the environment.
