Union Home minister P Chidambaram has been issued a notice by the election commission for violating the 'Model Code of Conduct' on Sunday. He has been asked to submit the reason for violating the MCC to the EC officials by 5pm on Monday.
THE ELECTION commission of India issued a notice to P Chidambaram, the Union home minister for violating the ‘Model Code of Conduct’ (MCC) on Sunday (April 5).
Before the 15th Lok Sabha election, the Congress received a big jolt as the EC issued notice to one of its most powerful leaders. The EC has also demanded a reply from the Union home minister for offering poll sops during his official visit to Rajasthan. Chidamabaram discussed regarding the coming Lok Sabha election with Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan, while he was there to discuss security matters.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) filed the report against Chidambaram to the chief electoral officer in Jaipur and demanded a stern action against Chidambaram and Gehlot. Chidambaram has been asked to submit the reason for violating the MCC to the concerned EC officials by 5pm on Monday (April 6).
The BJP accused Gehlot of raising issues like displacement of the Indian citizenship to the Pakistanis living in Jaisalmer and Barmer and the shifting of immigration facilities to the passengers of the Thar Express from Jodhpur to Munabao or Barmer. The BJP also charged the Union Home minister of ensuring Gehlot about taking up his demands for consideration at a press conference later. A six time MP from the Sivaganga constituency of Tamil Nadu, Chidambaram first entered the Parliament in 1984. A veteran INC leader, Chidambaram became the Union Home minister on November 30, 2008, after Shivraj Patil resigned from that post. Earlier, Chidambaram was the Union Finance minister.
