Eco-tourism at Kerwa Dam in Bhopal
It is one of the major problems in any government-organised venture in our country, where we are somehow unable to put that kind of mindset in the public that it is their responsibility to keep the surroundings clean and maintain the natural beauty.
A UNIQUE eco-tourism site has been started near the Kerwa Dam in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Inspite of being close to the main city it maintains a natural wilderness and beauty. On a sunny Sunday winter afternoon I was surveying the site, trying to find and click pictures of butterflies. Normally, I click and post them on my blog, but, this time around I thought to pen down my field experiences and share.

Kerwa eco-tourism site has one kilometer of walking area laden with trees, scrubs and flowering plants on both the sides. As one enters the walking lane, it is welcome site of the common emigrant and common grass yellow butterflies hovering around the flowers. It is not only these two types of butterflies one can find, many other butterflies can be spotted during this time of the year.

As one moves farther into the lane one can see Baronet, a nymphalid butterfly.

One can find them easily and enjoy their tawny organish colour on flat spread wings in the sun. Side lanes on the outcropped branch of trees in the shade one could see chocolate pansy butterfly chasing away another chocolate pansy!

Common crow, common mormon, cerulean and lime butterfly were some other butterflies which can be seen around at the site. At the parking bay at the entry of the site one can see variety of dragonflies too. It is good to see the concept the authorities are trying to build in eco-tourism but at the same time not much is being done on details and maintenance.

Eco-tourism means responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment and gives the local people a chance to enjoy the pristine natural beauty away from the humdrum of the city life. But, this particular site in Bhopal is mainly a picnic site with many people cooking, making loud noises and leaving behind bottles, plastics and waste which are bound to impact on its serenity and biodiversity.

Though, Kerwa Eco-Tourism Development Society charges Rs 15 as entry fee per person to the site, not many restrictions are put once a tourist is inside the site.

The eco-tourism site has two tree huts which add to viewing pleasure and a glass house. Motorbikes were being allowed inside the walking lanes, which should not be permitted but when inquired it was said that it is the staff who were later seen playing cards and cooking the food enjoying on one of the tree hut meant for the visitors.

It is one of the major problems in any government-organised venture in our country, where we are somehow unable to put that kind of mindset in the public that it is their responsibility to keep the surroundings clean and maintain the natural beauty. The problem lies with the concept too, wherein the fee should be higher, the staff should be vigil and he environment rules should be very strict.
