Education system blamed for increase in higher suicide rates
Data released by National Crime Records bureau indicates that suicide cases from 2006 have seen an increase by around 26%, which is alarming. The education system of India has been blamed for it.
WE HAVE heard a lot about the need for a change in the educational system in India. But, still they have not brought in the required changes to allow students to breathe a sigh of relief during a time, where competition among students are on the rise. Some data that has been released by National Crime Records Bureau may awaken the Indian authorities. The data reflects that there has been an increase in the number of student suicide reports from 2006, which stood at 5,857 suicides and in 2010, it has increased to 7,379 suicides. There is a serious need to look into the matter.
The figure clearly shows that there has been an increase of around 26% in a span of four years only, which is a dangerous stat for India’s future. It is these students, who will be playing a major role in shaping India in various sectors. It is in Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai that these suicides rates are in the higher scale, as reported by The Times of India. The above mentioned cities are the most advanced cities in the country and look at its condition.
Many academicians and health professionals point all their fingers towards the exams-driven education system that exists in India. When one goes for admissions in higher educational institutions, many students are disappointed as they do not get a seat in such institutions. Some of these students consider it to be a failure and go into depression and some of them give up their life in the process.
Higher educational institutions of the country such as IIT’s, IIM’s are infamous for such kind of suicides, due to the constant pressure they face in their academic sessions. The IIT’s have already witnessed seven suicides this year until September and the figures have been increasing. Most of these students hang themselves in the ceiling fan, so the IIT Kanpur authorities have also thought of replacing these fans with pedestal fans.
In a country, where people are obsessed with Bollywood movies, a film directed by Rajkumar Hirani, 3 Idiots also reflected the plight of the IIT students, where pressure gets to students, when they are not able to submit assignments and projects on a given deadline. Similarly, a student commits suicide in the movie too, after the Dean does not extend his deadline for the project. Yes, the reel life has been able to capture the real life about the students too, who suffer due to the educational system that is present in India.
