Ego is darkness; light of pure self dispels it: Spiritual message of Diwali
Traditionally, Diwali, celebrated as festival of lights, was earlier observed with grace and piety with lighted earthen lamps filled with oil and having cotton wicks. Now, electric festival lights and crackers introduced by the market forces, and exchanging of gifts has converted it into a festival of fun and frolics.

However, there is a need to revive the spiritual message of Diwali illuminations meant to rekindle hope of dispelling darkness with light and achieving self-knowledge where there was ignorance. In other words, Diwali spiritually signifies lighting of inner light and striving for self-realization for the victory of light of knowledge over darkness of ignorance.

Night of Diwali coincides with the darkest or new moon night in the month of Kartik. Before Diwali night, people clean and decorate their homes, but there is need to cleanse the inner self too.

On the night of Diwali, earthen oil lamps are burned throughout the night to ward off darkness and evil and remind us the victory of love over hatred, good over evil, self-knowledge over ignorance, real over unreal, eternal over transitory and light over darkness. We must pay heed to the true message of Diwali.

Here are some Diwali quotes said in spiritual haiku.

Light up your in-lamp / to dispel darkness of falsehood / and reality shine forth.

Let festival of light / reveal truth of existence / to lead shining life.

Outer dash and dazzle / give worth to inner darkness. / Self-shine dispels it.

Dispel your darkness / to have your share of in-light / Shed away ego.

Ego is darkness. / Light of pure self dispels it. / Then, Bliss engulfs.
