Eid Mubarak to everyone: India celebrates Eid
From Srinagar to South India, India saw the celebration of Eid in full swing on Wednesday. New dresses, skull cap, sevaiyan, hugging and wishing each other 'Eid Mubarak' was the order of the day.
WEDNESDAY SAW millions in India celebrating Eid with new clothes and delicious food. As India is the world’s third country to have the maximum number of Muslims hence it is no big surprise that the entire country saw much of the celebrations. Thousands of men and women poured water into an open prayer grounds and mosques to offer morning prayers that marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Merriment and celebrations followed the end of the fast with people hugging each other and wishing them. Hindus and Muslims are celebrating with equal fervour in India. People greeted each other with the much known ‘Eid Mubarak’ on social networking sites all over the country.
After the initial greeting the turn for the food comes. Sevaiyan, which is one of the delicacies of the festival, is prepared in almost all Muslim families and it is distributed among the guests. There are various ways in which this delicacy is prepared as it differs from place to place. Apart from that as we all know Briyani is the king of the feast followed by Firni and mithayi.
Delhi’s three biggest mosques - the 17th century Jama Masjid and Fatehpuri Masjid in Old Delhi and the Idgah mosque in central Delhi were packed with people. After the prayer they were seeing greeting each other. One of them said, “The prayers began at 9 and got over in 15-20 minutes. The mosque was overflowing with worshippers and so were the streets all around it, almost up to Town Hall. I believe there were one lakh people in all… There was joy everywhere.”Not only Muslims but various foreign, diplomats and refugees were seen sharing the happiness of the prayers. Various embassies were also seen celebrating the festival in the capital city. Places with large Muslim populations such as Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh saw similar kinds of celebrations.In Srinagar, both Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and separatist leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq offered prayers. Traditional rituals and foods were consumed with gusto in Uttar Pradesh celebrations. Assam, Orissa, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan were no exception as people were seen wearing skull caps and new dresses and praying. Soon after which the celebrations started as people visited each others' houses. Non-Muslims were seen visiting the homes of Muslims, and sharing the joy of the festival with them.
