Around eight people died in Bhopal on Monday as a water tank collapsed in a cluster of slums. More people are feared to be trapped inside the debris.
THE INCIDENT took place in Sai Baba Nagar basti around 12 am, when the municipality tank collapsed near a slum. The water tank came crushing down and fell on a electric transformer that eventually led to an electrical explosion; all this happened early in the morning when people in the area were sleeping. 33 people are believed to have been seriously wounded and they have been admitted to the hospital.
Rashid Bhai, a local person told nnis, “I got a call around 12:30 am, and the call was from my younger brother who told me about the incident. I called up all my friends for help; we recovered eight dead bodies; the maximum number of people who were crushed were men.” The tank was carrying about 5 lakh gallons of water. The cause behind the incident is yet to be known.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh has announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh each to the family members of the people who were killed in the incident. He is also providing free of cost treatment to the people who were injured in the incident. Besides this, the seriously injured people were given Rs 25,000 and the people with minor injuries were given Rs 10,000 each. The slum dwellers whose houses were destroyed in the incident are given Rs 20,000 to 50,000, according to the damage caused, reported NDTV.
The rescue operations are still on, and the senior administrators and police officials are supervising the rescue operations.
