AT LEAST eight foreign workers with United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, UNAMA, were killed and 12 others sustained injuries Friday afternoon when demonstrators protesting Quran burning event in a US church stormed into their office in Balkh, the northern province of Afghanistan.
Provincial governor spokesman Munir Ahmad Farhad said the protest began in a mosque in the provincial capital Mazar-e-Sharif but then turned violent when the demonstrators reached a United Nations compound in the city. The protesters shouted "Death to the USA, Death to Israel" after Friday prayers.
According to 303 Pamir Police Zone Commander, Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai hundreds of demonstrators in the provincial capital set fire to the UNAMA office during their protest against the burning of a copy of the holy Quran by a Florida church pastor. Before entering the building, they pelted stones at the UNAMA office. It has been reported that at least eight foreign nationals working with the UN mission were killed in the incident. However, Ahmadzai declined to identify the nationalities of those killed. He added the situation was under control of the police forces as the protesters were dispersed. It must be mentioned that a pastor in Florida had burnt a copy of the holy Koran on March 20 and this incident had evoked much consternation all across Afghanistan. The incident took place in the presence of another US pastor Terry Jones, who had aborted his plan of burning the holy book last year after considerable pressure came from the US government.Several Afghan cities witnessed the protests against Florida burning on Friday. Afghan President Karzai had also condemned the incident in strongest terms.
