'Either Arvind Kejriwal accepts the security cover or gives in writing that if anything happens to him police should not be blamed'
Aam Aadmi Party is set to form next government in Delhi with the outside support from the Congress. AAP's convener Arvind Kejriwal will be the next chief minister leading the government in the state. With chief ministership, Kejriwal will be entitled to get a full-proof security of Z-category level. However, Kejriwal has already declined to accept any security cover at the exchequer's cost.

Kejriwal's declination has left police officials into a great dilemma of what to do now, because in case anything happens to him police will have to ultimately receive the entire ire.

Over the security cover issue to Kejriwal we spoke to former DGP of Uttar Pradesh Prakash Singh in a bid to know if such scenario arises what options are left with the concerned authorities, who have to follow the laid down norms regarding VIP security at any cost.

Prakash Singh said that Kejriwal's argument that 'God is with him' doesn't sound logical for denying the security cover. Singh said that he should accept the security cover provided by the police.

Arvind Kejriwal should accept the security. Now he is going to be CM and it requires that type (Z-Class) of security. It has to be decided by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) whether he needs security or not. Kejriwal must have to accept that security. Saying that God is protecting everyone is not a logical reason. God is with everyone how can he say that nothing will happen to him,” said Prakash Singh.

Sensing the need of protection to Kejriwal, additional commissioner of police (security) V Renganathan wrote a letter asking him to accept the Z-Class security. According to the various reports, responding to the police's letter, the AAP president had said, “Thank you for offering me security. But as I have already informed earlier, I don't need any security, I don't need any escort or PSO. God is my biggest security,” wrote Kejriwal.

The former UP DGP said, “Is Kejriwal giving in writing that if anything happens to him the police should not be held responsible for that. If anything happens to him people will start saying that if police can't give security to its chief minister than how can they expect that it can save a common man's life. For e.g. if someone hits him with a stick than who will protect him.”

Prakash Singh said that if Kejriwal was not accepting Z-Category security which requires a large convoy then his security cover could be downgraded from Z category to X or Y-level but that too depends upon the inputs from IB.

“See, it all depends on the intelligence bureau and its inputs. If they think that security level can be minimized than they can propose a low level of security like X, Y -category security and Kejriwal must accept that,” said Prakash Singh.

When we reached to Aam Aadmi Party's MLAs asking them their views on whether Kejriwal should accept the security cover since he is now going to be a CM and threat to his life increases with this, the AAP MLAs said that they support Arvind Kejriwal's decision .

AAP MLA from Delhi's Jungpura constituency Maninder Singh Dhir said that those who are honest need not to fear. “This is his decision and we are satisfied with that, people who do nothing wrong don't need to fear from anyone. Those who do wrong things are fearful and need security cover. We are in favour that VIP culture must end. Women need more security in the country and if policemen will be busy in protecting the politicians than who will protect women. We respect his decision and fully support it”.

Echoing the same views as of Maninder Singh, another AAP MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi from Delhi's Model Town constituency said that money that was going to be spent on the security should be spent on public's welfare.

“Its his own decision and we fully support that, the money which is going to be spent on the security must be spent on the welfare of the people, this is a good decision and in the country's interest,” said Akhilesh Pati Tripathi.

Arvind Kejriwal's decision to decline security cover either to him or his MLAs would certainly benefit Delhi Police in terms of availability of police personnel for maintaining law and order situation in the city as according to a ET report, which quoted a union home ministry official, Delhi Police has more personnel deployed on VIP security duties than any other state in the country.

The report says that nearly 7,300 Delhi Police personnel are on VIP security duty for nearly 460 VIPs in the national capital, at an annual cost of nearly Rs 300 crore. In such scenario where AAP MLAs led by Kejriwal have refused security cover, nearly 500 men could be relieved of VIP security duties.

Meanwhile as per the latest reports coming in after refusing the security cover, the Arvind Kejriwal has now refused a government bungalow also.
