Ek Thi Daayan: Could have been best horror flick, but...
After his directorial debut of 'Makdee', one cannot doubt the deep insight of Vishal Bhardwaj on the folklores and stories on witches and other scary stories made popular in the subcontinent. With 'Ek Thi Daayan,' he takes the audience to a whole different urban setting unlike the rural one he created in 'Makdee'.

The movie sets up a theme of darkness and evil powers that lie out of the reach of ordinary people, and engages the audience with a promising start but loses track in the mid-way and fails to deliver to the complete satisfaction of viewers.

Bobo (Emraan Hashmi) is a top level magician and seems to be living an enjoyable life with his girlfriend Tamara (Huma Qureshi). But unknown to the world, his life is devastated due to hallucinations that have roots in his childhood. He seeks help from a psychiatrist who takes him to his childhood days and thus step by step, the story unfolds and takes audience to the scary world of witches and demons.

The first half is beautifully executed with the child star playing the role of young Emraan, beautifully supported by girl child artist and a superb performance by Konkona Sen Sharma. In the later parts of the movie, the character of Kalki Koechlin is under developed and it seems that an awesome actor like her is just filling the space. Also, the climax is not too convincing and loses the grip.

It’s a great effort by director Kannan Iyer, but it could have been made Bollywood’s best horror flick of all times.
