HEAVY RAINS wreaked havoc in El Salvador, causing the worst flooding till date, which has taken the lives of 90 people so far and injured countless others.

Out of these 90 people, more than 60 perished in the country's capital San Salvador. About 24 others from San Vicente, a city located at the base of the Chinchontepec volcano, were killed in mudslides, according to official sources. The mudslides have been massive, with one reportedly spread over eight km.

According to an estimate by Salvadorian Interior Minister Humberto Centeno, 7000 people rendered homeless, are already in shelters. There are also a lot of people missing, with their fate unknown. The country has already seen three days of continuous and heavy rainfall, which left streets choked with heaps of mud in Verapaz. These also swallowed vehicles, apart from creating hurdles in rescue and relief operations.

The rains, which caused this widespread destruction, were caused by a cold front and the Caribbean hurricane Ida. Apart from affecting El Salvador, it also caused destruction in neighbouring regions, reaching as far as southern Mexico, where more than 200,000 people were affected.
