Elderly people in Haryana's Sonepat district deprived of monthly pension: NHRC issues notice
The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Haryana's Chief Secretary calling for a report in a matter in which a number of elderly people in Sonepat district, including widows and physically challenged, are being deprived of monthly pension due to incorrect names registered in the list of the Social Welfare Department. NHRC asked for the reply to its notice within four weeks.
According to a NHRC statement it issued notice taking suo motu cognizance of a media report. The commission said that the beneficiaries are running from pillar to post to get their names corrected in the government records but to no avail. 

NHRC has observed that elderly person widows, physically challenged and elderly persons need special care. The contents of the Press report, if true, raises serious issue of violation of human rights.

According to the media report carried on the 2nd March, 2016, the beneficiaries of the pension scheme have approached the office of Social Welfare Department in Sonepat to get their names corrected. They submitted repeated affidavits to this effect as required. Still they did not receive pension and when they approached the officers in the Social Welfare Department, they were told that their affidavits were misplaced. Sometimes, the officers, turn them away saying that the server is down.

NHRC asked the state government to make arrangements to get their names properly registered in the beneficiaries list in their respective villages.
