Emergent concept of inclusive education
In the last few months, a few seminars and focus group discussions have been held on inclusive education at the primary level. A case is being made for respecting diversity and bringing about equity in education through differentiated teaching rather than stressing uniformity and similarity in education.

Inclusion as a concept in education consists of features such as providing emotionally secure learning environment; accepting, valuing, caring children; stimulating social climate of the school with a respect for diversity and differentiated instruction as a preconditions for the every child to achieve well and succeed.

In a nutshell, the debate on inclusive education has highlighted the features of such an education at the primary level. For a school to be inclusive, the following action points are essential.

·          Respecting diversity and valuing the difference as uniqueness of the learner

·          Trusting human potential of learning

·          Creating learning environment and resources that support learning

·          Providing freedom to learn with one's own pace and style

·          Ensuring full participation of all groups in school activities

·          Creating and managing socialization, fellow-feelings and friendship

Based on my recent reading on inclusive education, I have described the concept of INCLUSION by writing the following acrostic.

I: Integrative institutionalized education which cares for

N: Needs of all children and provides for a

C: Caring classroom environment to respect and celebrate diversity and uses

L: Learning methods that are both differentiated and collaborative to forge

U: Unity in diversity in

S: School and reflects

I: Inclusive ethos and policies

O: Officially articulated and

N: Nurtures every child to his or her fullest potential.
