Emerging trend of six-word stories, memoirs and poetry for the internet age
Six-word poems, stories and memoirs are picking up on the internet and also being published in the form of book series to cater for the fast life of today.

In this age of internet and social media, in which ‘tweeting’ and ‘momentary reading’ are in fashion, as a language art, six-word poems describing thoughts, feelings, memoirs and stories are becoming popular. In this regard, William Faulkner has aptly said that in the present age, “A novelist is a failed short story writer, and a short story writer is a failed poet”.

It is being said that ‘the shorter the sweeter, but harder’. A six-word poem combines language art and drama. It, however, requires a lot of thinking and hard work on word-play. In a six-word story, in a situation or event there has to be a movement of problem or conflict, action, and resolution or result.

Thus, a six-word poem must create ‘a moment of reading and sense making’. The formats for writing such poems vary from writer to writer. Some write all the six words in one line; some one word each in a line; some others three words in each of the two lines and some others write it as pattern poetry with 1-2-3-word line-wise sequence or any other formats.

If, one is writing all the six words in a line, the next line for new poem should be double spaced. The same rule is followed, if writing your poem in two-lines. For other formats single-line spacing is often used.

One important aspect of reciting such poems is developing a tongue for six-word rendering for an audience, which requires some practice in the use of rhythm, improvisation, internal rhymes, word play and tone as important elements of performance. It is important to practice, practice, and practice.

When you have written ten or more six-word poems, memorize your spoken word pieces to have more time for performance during rendering. The rendering of such poems is more like spoken power poetry to bring your work to life.

Here are some examples of my six-word inspirational thought poetry.

Nothing but bondages are / Untrue relationships.
Makes human birth meaningless /Worldly living.
Observe your vices / To free yourself.
