EMRAAN HASMI, Bollywood actor and relative of film producer and director Mahesh Bhatt, has alleged that he has been discriminated against by a housing society in Mumbai, on account of his religion. The actor who has created a niche for himself in the industry by his performances in some box office hits like Gangster and Jism had been denied permission to purchase a house in one of Mumbai's poshest address - Pali Hill in Mumbai. The housing society which looks into the various affairs of the colony, Nibhana Co-operative society, had rejected his application citing unsatisfactory reasons and refused to offer a no objection certificate even after receiving a token amount of Rs1 lakh.

Emraan Hashmi was taken aback by the response he received from the members of Nibhana Society. According to the actor,“My parents went to meet society members last week along with the seller and the broker but the members of the society refused to meet my parents, saying they were busy. ” The actor further added that the seller had told him that it will not be easy for him to obtain an NOC (no objection certificate) which is a document that is necessary for the sale and purchase of property. Dejected by the behavior of the society, the actor filed a case with the State Minority Commission alleging discrimination on the basis of religion and not supporting his candidature to buy a house in the Pali Hill’ Nibhana Society. He has sought action from the State Minority Commission against the specific members of the Nibhana Society.

Vice Chairman of the State Minority Commission Abraham Mithai also confirmed that they had indeed received a complaint from actor Emraan Hashmi against the members of the Nibhana Society. He said, his department was sending summons to the members asking an explanation in this context. It’s really astonishing, that although we are living in the 21st century, that some of us behave like early men by indulging in honour killings, gender discrimination, terrorism, casteism and many other issues of little importance, while ignoring many key issues.
