Enlighten your abode through the use of lights
Lights are important for your home as they not only illuminate your house but also decorate it in a magnificent way. Here you can explore some ideas through which you could enlighten your home through the use of lights.

HAVE YOU ever noticed the difference by using some specific kind of lights in specific areas of your home? Once you realize the difference, you will start playing with different styles of lights.

Light has a unique ability to shape the room by creating a palate of infinite moods. The types of lighting used in a room can dramatically change the way the room looks. The way we see an object in our homes is not determined by the object color but by the color of light shining on it.

There are numerous types of lights that one can use at home. But the main four types of lights are Ambient lighting, Task lighting, Accent lighting and Natural lighting.

Ambient lighting illuminates the whole room and it could be noticed from recessed and track lighting. Task lighting provides sufficient light to help perform the task at hand like reading, cooking etc. Task lighting should be glare free and it should make things easy to see without straining your eyes. Accent lighting is focused lighting that is used to illuminate a sculpture, piece of art, or architectural element in a room. Accent lighting is about three times as bright as ambient lighting.

Natural lighting is one that comes through windows, doors, and skylights. Depending on the time of day, season, or weather, it can vary in brightness and intensity.

The most important areas in any home are kitchen, bathroom, balcony and passage as most of us tend to ignore them. Cove indirect lighting, recessed lighting, task lighting, and pendant lighting can be used in the passage. Lighting for the kitchen normally consists of three layers - General lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. General lighting allows for looking into cabinets and drawers and for cleaning up. Place halogen pendant lights over bars and counters. Under-cabinet lights make excellent task lighting. In bathroom, lighting can determine if bathroom looks smaller or larger. The use of general lighting like recessed fixtures is required to light up more areas of larger bathrooms, as well as controlled lighting for creating the right mood. In balcony one could use paper lanterns, candles and hanging lamps.

Always consider the size of the rooms and accordingly choose home lighting fixtures that are in proportion to their size.If the room is small, choose a small lighting fixture; if the room is medium in size choose a light that is medium in size and so on. Flush ceiling lighting or spot lighting is perfect for low ceilings, whereas hanging lighting will suit high ceilings. In a neutral space, the sunny lights are the sole source of color, drawing more attention to their placement and shapes. Place light source at various heights within the room (ceiling, table, and floor) to add visual interest and human scale. Wall sconces on either side of the mirror also provide wonderful light to work by and are a decorative alternative.

Dimmers are a good way to help the lighting be more adaptable and they extend the life of incandescent bulbs considerably. Halogen lights can also create a look that is more natural than bulbs or fluorescent lighting. Highlight a framed piece of art with halogen track lighting or by attaching a picture light. Install halogen strip lighting or a pendent light. They are excellent accent light. We can achieve the ambience by buying different types or strength of light bulb, lamps are the most important lighting fixtures in living rooms, home offices, and family rooms, and they add a whole new decorative feature to the space.

Don’t go overboard with the home lighting. You want to create as much light as possible but you can have too much for one room. Don’t mix and match the lights too much, try and carry on the same theme throughout the room and the house. If your home is modern, choose contemporary lighting. If it is traditional cottages, choose conventional lighting as it’ll create a sense of flow throughout your home. Don't rely on down lights or recessed lights over the mirror as your only light source, because they cast shadows and create dark circles, making it difficult to perform tasks.

The great way to highlight a room is to install recessed lighting around the border of the ceiling. If you have a smaller ceiling, use smaller bulbs to achieve the look that you desire. Putting light bulb closer together will make the room brighter, while spreading them farther apart will soften the glow. If you have a higher ceiling use pendent light or wall washer/ up lighters which will give indirect glow and highlight depth of the room. In corners, use pendent lights to add vigor to the area. A chandelier over the dining room table creates a beautiful setting (use a dimmer).

There is no end to what you can do, when it comes to engineering a perfect interior illumination design for your home. Different rooms in the home need different lighting. Creative use of lighting can enhance your decorating project. Try to make use of the different types of lighting to make your home a beautiful showcase. Light also affects humans’ mood, behavior and the ability to perform tasks. Properly lit dwelling can result in the comfort and well being of their inhabitants.
