In the interview, Shourie utilised all his literary weapons and referred to the BJP leadership as 'humpty-dumpty' and 'Alice in blunderland'. Shourie's vehement attack against the party leadership is a major set back for BJP.
A WEEK after expulsion of senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh, former minister Arun Shourie went heavily against the modus operandi of the party and the RSS. During a TV interview on Monday (August 24), Shourie launched a furious attack on the entire brass of BJP and called for the RSS to ‘bombard the party headquarters'. The senior BJP leader also asked the RSS to replace the top leadership of the party with 10-15 nominees of its choice.
While arguing that the RSS had been “too democratic” and had given too much latitude to the party, Shourie asked the Sangh to take charge. He urged the RSS to remember that BJP was its most visible face and could not be left to its own devices in the current situation of drift. Shourie said, “It should keen an eye on the moral conduct of the party like an eagle.”
In the interview, Shourie utilised all his literary weapons and referred to the BJP leadership as ‘humpty-dumpty’ and ‘Alice in blunderland’. The former minister said, “My prescription is ‘jhatka’ (one swift execution) not ‘halal’ (slow execution). Saare, saare (lock, stock and barrel). There should be a total transformation.” A furious Shourie said the party leaders were indulged in “mutual protection and projection.” The party’s moral authority had depleted owing to involvement in cases like the cash-for-query scam, added Shourie.
Meanwhile, in response to Shourie’s statement, the depleted BJP is ready to take action against the veteran leader. According to party sources, the course of action against Shourie could be decided against the backdrop of the swift action taken against Jawant Singh who was expelled from the party this past week.
BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, “The party has taken note of the utterances of Shourie. It shall be responded to appropriately after discussions.” Rudy said Shourie was making such comments as BJP had nothing to offer as it was out of power. “This is a bad time for BJP. We have nothing to offer to him. This is the problem with admitting people into the party who are apolitical. They want to have the cake when you are in power,” said Rudy. When asked the reason for Shourie venting his ire, Rudy replied, “He (Shourie) is a free bird. His nomination to the Rajya Sabha is coming to an end. I am sure he is wanting an action against himself. He wants to become a martyr. We will make him a martyr.”
On the other hand, BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi described Shourie’s outburst as “unfortunate.” Attacking Shourie, he said “the so-called writers are challenging fighters...the party is going through a phase of transition and will emerge stronger after such developments.”
Shourie’s vehement attack against the party leadership is a major set back for BJP. While other leaders of BJP sidelined themselves from the party’s decision to expel Jaswant Singh, Shourie came forward and criticised the leadership. In a day or two, the top leaders of BJP would certainly announce expulsion or at least suspension of Arun Shourie. However, Shourie’s outburst clearly shows that there is huge internal crisis in BJP and the national party is battling from the ideological clashes of the party leaders.
